What's really going on inside your body, beyond just your weight

It can be challenging when positive lifestyle changes are not reflected by changes on the scale. A balanced diet and regular physical activity may not always provide clear feedback about what is occurring within the body. Traditional weight measurements present a single figure and do not differentiate between muscle mass, fat mass, or bone density. Without a clearer understanding of body composition, it can be difficult to accurately assess changes over time or evaluate progress.

Frustrated by conflicting body health advice?

It’s easy to feel uncertain when every diet or exercise plan claims to be the “best” way to improve your health. You might step on the scale week after week and see little change, even when you’re eating well and staying active. Because the scale only shows one number, it can be hard to know what’s really happening inside your body. Without clear information about your fat mass, lean mass, and bone density, it’s easy to rely on incomplete signals. A DEXA scan provides an accurate snapshot of your body composition, helping you better understand these changes and make more informed decisions about your health.

Here's how it works...

Book Your Scan And Complete Safety Checks

Book your appointment and answer a short set of safety questions. You should not have a DEXA scan if you are pregnant or think you may be pregnant.

Prepare Before You Arrive

Avoid food for 4 hours before your scan where possible, and let the staff member know what you ate if you were unable to fast. Wear loose, comfortable clothing with no metal and remove items from your pockets before the scan.

Lie Down For The Scan

Lie flat on the scanning table and remain still while the machine operates. A dual energy x ray passes over your body twice, and the scan usually takes only a few minutes to complete.

Review Your Body Composition Report

Receive a report showing measures such as fat mass, lean mass, and bone mineral content. The scan uses a low dose of ionising radiation, approximately comparable to a small fraction of everyday background radiation, and the results are not a medical diagnosis, so discuss them with your GP or treating health practitioner if required.

Our health-centred team

Our dedicated team of leading doctors, specialists, nurses and allied health practitioners work together on-site in our state-of-the-art health assessment facility.

Your DEXA body composition scan questions

How long will the DEXA scan take?

A initial DEXA scan appointment will usually take around 30 minutes, and a follow-up DEXA scan appointment will take around 15 minutes.

We recommend wearing loose, light, comfortable clothing (no denim or metal e.g. studs, belt buckles, underwire bra).

The DEXA scan uses very low energy x-ray, less than most common diagnostic x-rays. The exposure from Oracle Healthcare’s DEXA scan is equivalent to 0.1μSv.

Whilst radiation levels are very low, DEXA scans and X-rays are not recommended for pregnant women as significant body composition changes during pregnancy remove the usefulness of the results.

For maximum accuracy and repeatability, we recommend food fasting for 8 hours prior to your appointment if possible. You may drink fluids as normal.

Yes you can exercise before a DEXA scan.

No referral is required for a body composition DEXA scan in our St Leonards clinic, however please note referrals are required for DEXA bone density scans.

No, unfortunately DEXA body composition scans are not yet covered by Medicare. We recommend you contact your individual private healthcare provider to check your policy inclusions.

A DEXA body composition scan gives you a detailed look inside your body. It tells you how much fat you have, how much lean muscle, and your bone density.

It breaks this down for different parts of your body, like your arms, legs, and trunk.

This is much more helpful than just a number on the scales.

You can see if your diet and exercise are building muscle, losing fat, or keeping your bones strong.

It helps you understand your body better than traditional methods.

Yes, a DEXA body composition scan is a very safe test.

It uses a very low dose of X-ray, much less than a standard X-ray you might get at the dentist.

The amount of radiation is tiny, similar to what you get from natural background sources every day.

It’s a quick and non-invasive procedure.

You simply lie still on a table for a few minutes while the machine scans your body.

Most people can have one without any worries.

A DEXA body composition scan is known for being very accurate.

Other methods, like bioelectrical impedance scales or skinfold calipers, can be less precise.

Those methods can be affected by things like how much water you’ve drunk or who is doing the test.

DEXA scans measure your body’s make-up directly.

They give you a clear picture of fat mass, muscle mass, and even bone mineral density.

This helps you get reliable data to track your progress.

Preparing for your DEXA body composition scan is easy.

You should wear comfortable clothing, like activewear, without any metal zips, buttons, or embellishments.

Don’t wear anything with underwires or metal fasteners.

Try not to eat a big meal right before your scan.

Avoid heavy exercise on the day of your scan.

Also, try not to take any calcium supplements on the day of your scan, as this can affect the results.

Following these simple steps helps get the most accurate readings.

A DEXA body composition scan is a quick process.

The actual scan itself usually takes about 6 to 10 minutes.

You just lie flat on your back on a padded table.

The machine moves slowly over your body.

There’s no discomfort during the scan.

After the scan, you’ll generally spend a bit more time with a health professional to go over your results.

So, plan for about 20-30 minutes for the whole appointment.

Yes, you will get a detailed report after your DEXA body composition scan.

This report shows your fat mass percentage, lean tissue percentage, and bone mineral density.

It also breaks these numbers down for different body regions.

You’ll get to see where you hold your fat and muscle.

A health professional will go through the report with you.

They will explain what each part means for your health and goals.

This helps you understand the information clearly.

A DEXA body composition scan gives you clear numbers to work with.

If you want to lose fat, it shows you if your efforts are working.

If you want to gain muscle, it measures your progress directly.

It can also highlight potential health risks, like too much fat around your organs.

Knowing your bone density can help you plan for long-term bone health.

This data helps you make smarter choices about your diet and exercise.

How often you get a DEXA body composition scan depends on your goals.

Many people find it useful to get one every 3 to 6 months.

This lets you track your changes over time and see if your efforts are paying off.

If you’re making big changes to your diet or exercise, an earlier follow-up scan can be helpful.

For general health monitoring, once a year might be enough.

Talk to a health professional about what makes sense for you.

A DEXA body composition scan can show you things beyond just your overall weight.

It can measure visceral fat, which is fat stored around your organs.

High levels of visceral fat are linked to a higher risk of conditions like heart disease and type 2 diabetes.

The scan also provides bone density information.

This can flag early signs of osteoporosis or weakening bones.

Knowing these things helps you take steps to improve your long-term health.

After your DEXA body composition scan, a health professional will discuss your results with you.

They won’t just give you numbers, but help you understand what they mean.

You can talk about your health and fitness goals.

They can offer insights into how your current lifestyle affects your body composition.

This might include general guidance about nutrition or physical activity.

The aim is to help you use the data to make positive changes for your health.
