Metabolic rate testing is the gold standard test for measuring the number of calories your body burns at rest, known as your Resting Metabolic Rate (RMR). This test helps determine how efficiently your body converts food into energy.
Even at rest, the body needs energy (calories) for essential functions such as brain activity, breathing, and blood circulation. The RMR accounts for the majority of your daily energy expenditure, making up 50 to 80% of your total daily energy use. While the calories you burn through daily activities, work and exercise vary greatly depending on your lifestyle and choices, your Resting Metabolic Rate (RMR) remains constant.
Your RMR is highly unique to you, and although simple algorithms can predict your calorie requirements based on age, weight, height, and gender, these predictions can be highly inaccurate compared to the precise results from a Resting Metabolic Rate Test.

Benefits of Resting Metabolic Rate Testing
Weight management
Knowing your RMR takes the guesswork out of knowing how many calories your body needs at rest. This information is essential for creating an effective diet plan to achieve weight loss, weight gain, or weight maintenance goals.
Personalised nutrition
With accurate RMR data, you can tailor your calorie intake to match your body’s specific energy needs, ensuring you consume the right amount of nutrients without overeating or undereating.
Exercise Planning
Knowing your RMR can help design a more effective exercise programme. By understanding how many calories you burn at rest, you can better estimate how many additional calories you need to burn through physical activity to meet your fitness goals.
Metabolic Health
Monitoring your RMR can provide insights into your metabolic health. Significant changes in your RMR may indicate metabolic issues, such as hypothyroidism or hyperthyroidism, which can impact your overall health and require medical attention.
Energy Levels
Understanding your RMR helps you manage your energy levels better. By aligning your food intake with your energy expenditure, you can avoid fatigue and ensure you have enough energy for daily activities and exercise.
Chronic Disease Prevention
Maintaining a healthy weight through a balanced diet and appropriate calorie intake can help prevent chronic diseases such as diabetes, cardiovascular disease, and obesity.
How does the Resting Metabolic Rate Test work?
The test uses a technique called indirect calorimetry, which involves breathing into a mouthpiece or a mask connected to an analyser, while you relax in a reclined position. The device measures the amount of oxygen you consume and the carbon dioxide you produce, to calculate your caloric requirements.
The test typically takes about 15 minutes, during which you need to remain relaxed and avoid talking or moving excessively.
